Christina Floyd (M.A R.C.A) is an artist who has worked extensively in Britain, the United States and Australia. She has had ten one-person shows to date which include the Serpentine and South London Galleries in the U.K and the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art in Western Australia. Her enduring artistic concerns are Modernist: the linear, the optical, powerful spatial construction that has a facticity in common with the best of Modern Design and Architecture. Her most recent paintings combine optically strong colour fields with line that is both floating and liquid and which suggests a progressive ordering and a transformative randomness. The eye darts back and forth as it reads the surface picking up active after- images which swing and vibrate. There is a latent energy expressed which creates a kinaesthetic response in the spectator as the various contrasting elements of velocity, blurring and dizzying, fracture the level evenness of the plane. They are frenzied and frozen, elusive and concrete. Paring down her method to simple definitive moves, the psychological place these paintings inhabit is as complex as the fleeting state of apprehension itself.
